The Dow Jones Industrial Average topped out at 14165 just under a year ago. Yesterday, it closed at 10365.

    That’s a spread of 3800 points, or 26%.

    Ouch.

    From CNN’s main RSS feed:

Congress has Bailout Plan | CNN RSS
Lawmakers have reached agreement on a bipartisan counterproposal to the Bush administration’s $700 billion financial bailout plan. CNNMoney reports both parties in the House and Senate agreed to a set of principles on revisions to the rescue plan, which calls for the Treasury Department to buy up bad mortgage securities from banks in an effort to get them to lend again.

But clicking through to the article rendered a completely different take on the story.

Lawmakers split over bailout - Sep. 25, 2008
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — One day after President Bush said the nation’s economy is at grave risk, the high-stakes negotiations over the proposed $700 billion bailout of the financial system ended in chaos on Thursday.

    Here’s screenshots of each:

UPDATE: Between the time I noticed this, and got around to posting it, CNN removed the rosier RSS synopsis. The new title is “No deal: Bailout talks spiral into chaos” in the feed. NetNewsWire marks up the changes as such:

Congress has Bailout Plan No deal: Bailout talks spiral into chaos
Lawmakers have reached agreement on a bipartisan counterproposal Negotiations over the proposed financial bailout unraveled Thursday as lawmakers bickered over competing counterproposals to the Bush administration’s $700 billion financial bailout rescue plan. A White House meeting was meant to speed approval of an agreement but instead revealed deep divisions between Democrats and Republicans, CNNMoney reports both parties in the House and Senate agreed to a set of principles on revisions to the rescue plan, which calls for the Treasury Department to buy up bad mortgage securities from banks in an effort to get them to lend again. reports.

So it looks like I just managed to get my copy of the feed right before they made these sweeping changes.

Daily Kos: McCain Hasn’t Read Paulson’s Plan
ANCHOR: As for the massive Wall Street bailout McCain insists it have…
JSM: Oversight that is effective and transparent. We need people like Warren Buffet and Mike Bloomberg and Mitt Romney to have an oversight of this. We can’t put that responsibility in the hands of one person.
ANCHOR: The crunch question. Would you vote for it as it’s presently constructed?
JSM: I have not had a chance to see it in writing so I have to examine that.

    What. The. Fuck.

That’s it. Game over, man. Game over!

As everyone’s aware, John McCain “suspended his campaign” to return to Washington and work on the financial market bailout. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) quickly responded with harsh criticism of McCain’s ploy, saying, “It would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation’s economy. If that changes, we will call upon them. We need leadership; not a campaign photo op.”

A friend of mine once referred to this kind of “leadership” as “being a seagull.” Basically, McCain wants to show up, fly around, make a lot of noise, crap all over the place, and then leave. He’s been told by the Folks in Charge not to bother.

George F. Will - McCain Loses His Head?
It is arguable that, because of his inexperience, Obama is not ready for the presidency. It is arguable that McCain, because of his boiling moralism and bottomless reservoir of certitudes, is not suited to the presidency. Unreadiness can be corrected, although perhaps at great cost, by experience. Can a dismaying temperament be fixed?

This, from George Will, of all people.

Pony Gets New Look for 2010 Ford Mustang, Hints at More Chiseled Look
Curious about what the 2010 Ford Mustang looks like?  Its new pony badge offers a clue.  Like the upcoming restyled Mustang, the new pony is more defined, more muscular and sure to catch the eye of Mustang enthusiasts.

I hope it lives up to the hype. I’ve been rather underwhelmed by the last few Ponies, though I must say that I really dig the newest.

McCain is really losing it this week. During speeches, he can’t remember if he’s railing against the SEC or the FEC. He erroneously blames Obama for the current financial markets crisis, when his own likely Secretary of the Treasury is actually the leading proponent of the policies that lead us here. And he flip-flopped on the AIG bailout.

Paper That Was Basis For McCain Claim Of Obama-Raines Link Says He’s ‘Exaggerating Wildly’
Now The Washington Post’s very own fact-checker has declared that the McCain campaign is “exaggerating wildly,” dismissing the Raines claim as “particularly dubious.”

And now, he’s making bellicose claims that former Fannie Mae CEO Frank Raines is a “leading advisor” to Senator Obama… based on the fact that Obama called him a time or two to talk about the crisis that Raines was central to.

Obama took the time to call a central figure in the current melt-down. Isn’t that the basis of investigation and personal education? To seek out people in-the-know or in-the-middle-of-things and find out what their (right or wrong) perspective is? Doesn’t Congress do exactly this when it subpoenas controversial figures to talk about failures, crises, and tragedies? They don’t just talk to their friends, advisors, and subject matter experts; they call upon critics, central figures, the parties at fault, and more.

If McCain isn’t doing this himself, if he hasn’t talked to the central figures (CEOs, COOs, General Counsels, board members, etc) at AIG, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and more, to find out what their perspectives are, then he’s completely unfit to make decisions regarding the situation.

I mean, never mind that his “leading advisor” is former Texas Senator Phil Gramm is quite personally and directly responsible for the deregulation that lead us into this pit…

    Ares Homepage
After the cleverly designed low-observable leading edge features and radar absorbent materials were carefully removed, the scrapping process became brutally simple. A grapple-equipped Caterpillar vehicle rolled up to the F-117A and quickly reduced it to a pile of junk.

We often think of craft like the F-117 Nighthawk as “the future” and it seems like the Stealth “Fighter” is still the new kid on the block. After all, the B-52 entered service in 1955, the F-14 and F-16 in 1974, and the F/A-18 in 1983, and they’re all still in active service. Of course, the F-117 was only unveiled to the public in 1988 and saw combat duty for the first time during the first Persian Gulf conflict, but in reality it entered active duty in 1983. So, while it feels like it’s only been around for 15 years or so, it actually had a fairly long, 25 year career.

The B-2 Spirit, on the other hand, always seemed to me like the “older brother” that’d been around in secret for longer. Maybe I always felt that way because of the Northrop XB-35YB-49, which were flown from 1946 to about 1950 or so, but never entered production. The B-2, however, didn’t enter active duty until _1997,” a fact that shocked the hell out of me. It was publicly disclosed in 1988, which is why I remember reading about it as a grade schooler, but it didn’t actually enter service until I was in college! It’s only just past 10 years in service, and looks to have a long life yet.

But we still get to see some grizzly billions-down-the-drain carnage for the younger sibling.
